Starting a Placement agency company in India requires a bit of know hows. When i started i thought starting a company legally is going to be very time consuming with lot of formalities. Because most of my friends asked how i started mu company and requested to write a post on how to start a consultancy company, i am writing this post.
I will be very straight forward and will write the points in steps for better understanding.
1. Decide a name for your company: Deciding name for the company is very important as this is the brand for which you will be working for the rest of your life. You should like the name and you should be able to relate yourself to the company.
2. Buy a domain name: You should buy a domain name for your company. Its compulsory because no body would trust a company who doesn’t have a good website and domain name is very important for having a website. Domain names are cheap around Rs. 450 /year and you can register a domain easily from this link and you can even check whether you company name is available or not by clicking this link?
3. Get your website Designed and Hosted: Next step is to get yourself a professional website design for your company. Designing could start from Rs. 7000 but i would recommend you to invest a little in website designing and hire a professional website design company . Professional design could cost you starting from Rs. 15,000 and basic Hosting for your website could cost you around Rs. 1000 per year.
4. Choose the type of company you want to open: Deciding which type of company you want to open is something which you have to do. There are 4 types of company which you can form in India.
- Sole Proprietorship : A sole proprietorship also known as a sole trader, or simply proprietorship is a type of business entity which is owned and run by one individual and where there is no legal distinction between the owner and the business. All profits and all losses accrue to the owner . All assets of the business are owned by the proprietor and all debts of the business are his debts and he must pay them from his personal resources
- Partnership: A partnership is a type of business entity in which partners (owners) share with each other the profits or losses of the business. Partnerships are often favored over corporations for taxation purposes, as the partnership structure does not generally incur a tax on profits before it is distributed to the partners
- Private Limited: A private company is a type of company incorporated under the India. It has shareholders with limited liability and its shares may not be offered to the general public, unlike those of public limited companies
- Public Limited: A public limited company is a type of limited company in the India which is permitted to offer its shares to the public.
5. Starting as a sole proprietorship firm: If you are starting alone i recommend you to start as a sole proprietor, because its easy to start and total control is in your hands. There are not much formalities for this kind of firm, you just have to get a current account ready in your name and you are ready to do business. However, if you company turnover reaches 10 lakhs per year, you will have to register for service tax.
6. Open a current account in any Bank: Opening a current account is the most important part of business. If you are opening a sole proprietership firm and have your service tax registration done, you can open account in any bank you want. But if you have not applied for service tax registration, you can opt for government banks to open the account. You can look for IDBI bank as opening current account is quite easy in that bank. For opening a current account you will need a company letterhead, Visiting card, and company stamp.
7. Buy naukri or monster login: You have to buy naukri or monster login to supply candidates to your clients. This is the costly part of consultancy business but you have to buy this to get started. Naukri login costs around Rs. 60,000 for 3 months and monster is almost around Rs. 35,000 for 3 months. You can buy it anytime but i recommend you to buy it once you get your first client. Don’t forget to negotiate as who knows you can get a better deal.
8. You are ready to do the business. Just go ahead and start searching for clients.
Cheers

Dear Anjali,
In partnership firm if there is any profit it gets divided in equal parts same way it implies to loss also,so as per business rule all partner has to cover loss.
Hope it solves your query

Hello,
I am looking forward for starting up a placement consultancy mainly for healthcare professionals. Whatever you suggested was good to have an idea and a bit of understanding but i am just finding it difficult to implement it practically . Monster and naukri thing is quite costly if you are supposed to be stepping for the first time. Is there any other way around like to approach the companies HRMs directly and offer the services. please help me out with giving some more tips and suggestions.

Good article!
But I will not term it as 100% good information.
A professional website from a Professional Developer will cost only around Rs. 4000.
Also there are numerous consultancies who share naukri / monster login and it is available for 1500 or 2000 Rs in market.
Any person who wants to start a business needs proper guidance with respect to financial matter.
I just added this comment to educate people who want to start a consultancy.

Dear Rajesh,
Thanks for visiting this site and giving your valuable suggestion, but as far as i think quality matters.
The information provided in my post is 100% genuine. There are many companies who charge for 50000 for website design. What do you think are they just fooling the customers? What matters is brand, quality and professionalism. Its not that i don’t know about cheap prices. I also have got few sites designed at the rate of Rs. 800 per page, but that is sheer waste of money. Where is the ROI (Return on investment)? Yes sites can be designed in 4000 but don’t call them professional site. can u get real diamond for Rs. 400??
As for naukri/monster prices, the prices i mentioned is the cost which we get directly from the company. Yes, you can get it on sharing basis but you have to be quite sure before you do so. There are again lots of problems associated withing shared logins like waiting for login and limited access time etc. If finance is main problem you can start with sharing basis and then you can go ahead buying your own dedicated login.
Regards,
Sangita

Dear Sangita,
I accept that whatever you had written in this article is ABSOLUTELY GENUINE. No doubt about that.
The point that I wanted to mention through my comment was -
“recruitment business can also be started with a low investment (example: putting website with small companies) and adopting alternate methods (example: like sharing databases)”.
When a user reads your article he/she will feel that he/she needs at least 40k to 65k to start a HR consultancy.
But, the point that I am trying to make is – it can be started with a investment of 1.5 lacs or with 60k or with a little investment of as low as 5000 Rs.
What ever I had written in my comment is out of my own knowledge – I have around 5+ Yrs of HR Consultancy experience and running my own firm concentrating on HR Consultancy and Web development for the past 3 years.
Again I would like to mention that the article is very nice and ABSOLUTELY GENUINE; it is definitely useful for some body looking to start a HR Consultancy.

- Apr 15th, 10
Dear Mr. Amit,
You don’t need any licence from the Government to run a placement consultancy in India for Companies in India.
If you are going to do Overseas Placements then you need to regsiter with the Ministry of Overseas, Indian Government.
Having said that, there are tons and tons of consultancies in India catering for local market.
If we have to stay ahead of others; if we have to get an edge over others then naturally there are certain things that we must do like for example reducing the consulting cost (if other consultancies charge 1 month salary then we must charge 15 days salary etc;)
Registration formalities are like that; IT IS NOT MANDATORY but will give an edge over other consultancies.
You can do the following Low Cost Registration Formalities
a)Register for a Service Tax Number; this will cost you 1500 to 2000 rs Max.
(In your bills to client mention “service tax 10.3% is borne by Us (your consultancy)”; client will be double happy).
b)Have a current account in your company name; ask for cheques from Client in your company name (although it might be a proprietorship).
c) Register your Consultancy name with the local municipality office in your locality so that no body else mis-uses your company name; it will cost you around 2000 Rs Max; there are many agents available for this. Just visit your local
Municipality office once.
Again, as I mentioned earlier these are NOT MANDATORY BUT DESIRABLE to get an edge over other consultancies.
Hope this info was useful to you.
Next time if you have any doubts do mail me directly at r.rajeshkumar1983@yahoo.co.in; I will try my level best to help you with all the information that I know.
Thanks & Regards,
R.Rajeshkumar

For the kind attention of all readers.
Reg: Current Account
Dear readers,
to all those who want to start your own venture.
RBI as issued a new notification that any proprietorship business to open a current account will need min of 2 documents among the following like Service Tax / Sales Tax / VAT; Company Registration; MOU etc; etc;
There is a list of 7 to 8 documents out of which 2 is needed to open a Current Account in any bank whether public or private (including IDBI!!!!!).
This makes the task of starting a small business still more difficult. I am writing this not to discourage you but to make yourself aware of all things required to start a business.

===================================
Yes, what you have mentioned is absolutely right; there are many people who want to earn money without proper investment.
Proper Investment + Hardwork + Determination can only help you in business.
You must treat yourself as a CEO, as a Marketing Executive, as a Recruiter why even as a peon .. then alone you can win in this competitive world esp in case of business.
You cannot simply sit down and say … I am the M.D, I had invested so and so …. this approach might work for the ambanis, birla’s and tata’s whose grandfather and father have already established the business and a brand name but for people like us (all – who are reading this blog / article … people with limited finance in hand; limited support, middle class) … there is only one way — Work and Work hard!

Rajeshkumar
- Jul 14th, 10
Sidhu,
All the very best for your venture.
But, I think you have advertised too early.
In this business of Job Portals the first and best thing to do is to build database … good candidates say 1 lac; 5 lacs; 10 lacs; etc; then alone will people be ready to buy.
Without knowing the strength of database, even if it is 200 Rs; no body will buy.
There are many big players who have lost their place in this business
- NDTV Jobs (from NDTV Channel)
- Times Jobs (from Times India)
- Click Jobs (From Bharat Matrimony)
There are eventually only two players Naukri.com and Monster.com which comprises almost 95+ % of market share.
Others have simply lost the plot.
So, my general suggestion is .. be positive, have it as free for some time so that you get good candidates as well as clients; then after building a database …. you can start marketing.
All the best!
nisha
- Jul 14th, 10
having going through all of the comments written above, one thihng is clear that we all are ready to run but donot know where is the start point. though we ve thought about the finishing point. my point is which segment of people to target, those who are freshers or those who are looking for a big change. if fresher thing is concerned we can go to the B colleges n speak to the authorities. but for that i think we ve to keep our prices low than market price to fetch the business.
Rajeshkumar
- Jul 14th, 10
Nisha,
in my opinion the only person whom we can target are those who are looking for a change.
Why should a company come to a consultancy to recruit freshers?
They can directly contact a college placement officer, colleges would welcome them with red carpet or they can advertise in one word in the last page of a newspaper .. still they will get 1000′s of resumes.
So there is no reason why a company must come to a consultancy for freshers recruitment.
The Company expects only these things from a consultancy
- to find probable candidates who are looking for a change
- to find probable candidate who are NOT looking for a change; but the consultancy must lure them with good job offers so that they change their mind and look for a change.
So, the target for a consultancy are those candidates with 2+ Yrs Exp to 15+ Yrs Exp.
