We, GS Job Point, has started HR interview section with HR professionals from prestigious organizations, and we hope that our Interview Section will benefit the job seekers as well as the recruitment consultants. This time, we came across Mr.S.Sundararaman, HR Manager of L&T Construction (Buildings & Factories IC), who has rich experience of 27 years in Human Resource Field and we had a small conversation with him and the same is reproduced below :-

•Tell us about yourself ?
Basically a Commerce Graduate; did my PGD in PMIR & Labour Welfare; also did my PGD in Business Administration from Symbiosis, Pune. Has 3 decades of work experience. I am a person who would love to interact with others, especially young and upcoming students from professional institutions.

•How was your journey so far?
There have predictably been ups and down throughout; however, I must admit that the journey has been enjoyable and with lots of learning in the process.

•What is the most stressful thing that you usually face?
Some employees unable to have `work-life balance’ owing to work pressure among other reasons.

•Are there really lack of good opportunities for job seekers?
Not really. The candidates will really have to be smart. Good academic record coupled with GK and subject knowledge to grab the opportunity that would come their way.

•What do you think the reason of so much unemployment in the country?
One of the main reasons for so much unemployment is `lack of employability skills’ in most of the candidates across the country. Another reason of course is the increasing population.

•Do you think making a good resume really matters a lot in today’s scenario?
YES. Presenting oneself before the prospective employers is very significant.

•What tips would you like to give to candidates for making a nice resume?
There are so many helping hands available in the form of Internet, Senior and skilled professionals , friends and relatives, HODs and Professors, etc. to make out a nice Resume.

•Do you feel that getting a good job nowadays is more of an art rather than skill sets?
Desired skill sets combined with smartness in handling an interview would help in succeeding in an interview.

•Do you seek help from professional consulting agencies, if yes, what things matters most for empanelment?
YES. The agencies should have a clear understanding of the client’s man power requirements and fulfill the same truly professionally at all times to the maximum extent possible.

•What piece of advice would you like to give to job seekers and placement consultants?
Job seekers should keep their eyes and ears open to look and hear for possible openings, develop good net-working skills and most importantly, PREPARE themselves well with well-prepared Resume, common sense, sound subject knowledge and general knowledge (with updates), to excel in interviews.

Placement Consultants should have a clear understanding of the client’s manpower requirements, shortlist only the quality profiles (even if they are less in number), have a clear chat/interview with the prospective candidates and line them up for interviews without fail. Should render quality service to both the clients as well as the prospective candidates at all times, in order to achieve “win-win” situation.

•What is most satisfying thing for you?
Possessing job knowledge and job satisfaction in whatever thing I do professionally and whole-heartedly.

I am a HR Professional with experience of 12 years. My expertise lies in Strategic HR Planning, Talent Acquisition, Performance Management, Employee Engagement, and Organizational Development. I have expertise in handling startup businesses
How was your journey so far?
I had come to Mumbai in 2001 and since then every day has been a new learning experience.
I had started my career with a consulting firm as Process Executive. I have also worked with BPO and Advertising and Production Companies. Currently I work with Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. as Deputy Vice President – Human Resources; it’s been almost 6 years with ZEEL and considering the growth, learning and exposure its has been a phenomenal journey. I have seen almost all the facets of the business be it traditional media in the domestic market; new media (internet and mobile) or international business. I also got exposure to other new and emerging businesses of the group like education, retail, investment and wellness.
What is the most stressful thing that you usually face?
HR, like any profession, has a unique set of challenges and stresses. Its generally a huge challenge dealing with a workforce that is disengaged.
With the increase in complexities in business and function in the current scenario we come up with new business and have to close some businesses which are not doing good. It’s generally not easy to balance being an employee advocate with being accountable to business metrics. I would say the main sources of my stress are layoffs, right-sizing and trying to get the most efficient use out of your talent.”
Are there really lack of good opportunities for job seekers?
No it’s the other way round; it’s difficult the get the perfect fit for the role.
What do you think the reason of so much unemployment in the country?
Lack of talent in the people
Do you think making a good resume really matters a lot in today’s scenario?
Yes it really matters because that is your first impression however it should always be realistic and the candidate should be able to explain what is mentioned in the resume.
What tips would you like to give to candidates for making a nice resume?
The resume should always be drafted for the role / position that you are applying for rather than being generic. It should highlight the required competencies, skills and experience required for the role.
Do you seek help from professional consulting agencies, if yes, what things matters most for empanelment?
No we have an internal talent acquisition team
What piece of advice would you like to give to job seekers and placement consultants?
Jobseekers should not just sit and wait for their dream job but create a position for themselves in the organization. They need to be champions in their field at the same time they should competent, passionate, motivated about the role. They need to leverage on their strengths and talents rather that working on their areas of improvement.
They need to be more active on the social media / communities.

What is most satisfying thing for you?
I love challenging myself to take new and complex assignments and delivering on the same; it also provides a lot of learning opportunity. It’s quite satisfactory when I am able to achieve theorganizational objective by managing the workforce and partnering the business.

Basic Requirements to start a HR consultancy

I have gone through some of the comments and found some of the query like  i am a MBA in Hr  ,or I have experience in so and so …. can i start a Hr consultancy? My answer is yes you can . Anything is possible if you make up your mind and its well said that “Jahan chah hai waah Raah hai”  . See if you are planning to sell your skills as a service provider,  the first thing you need to know is how it works and gain the expertise on it. I have mentioned some of the points based on my experience  hope it helps you

The important requirements  to start a HR consultancy  are:-

1)   Complete knowledge of recruitment process.

2)   Ready for hard work and long working hours.

3)   Presentable and Good communication skills.

4)   Basic accounting knowledge.

Complete knowledge of Recruitment Process

One should know the basics of recruitment process and should be aware of the current trends in recruitment process as it will be an advantage because here you will be selling your this skill in a form of product or service.

Ready for hard work and long working hour

We all know that hard work is the key to success. And when you start something new you need to give it more time to make it successful. Same implies here as you need to be ready for long working hours as recruitment takes time.

Presentable and Good communication skills

One should be presentable and should have very good communication skills as he has to sell the recruitment skills to clients in terms of service. So you need to make them believe that you have that skill which they are looking into their recruiting partner and for this good communication are required to convince them with good presentation.

Basic accounting knowledge

One should have basic accounting knowledge because you need to raise the invoices regularly for clearance of bills, once your candidate joins the organizations.

How to convert clients?

Client conversion is “an art of convincing“. When you become an expert in convincing you will get more clients. Here you have to sell your services and you have to convince that as a service provider that you are perfect to fulfill their requirements. There are a lot of ways by which you can convert clients which include regular meetings with clients, being active on social networking websites, posting your ads on professional networking websites.

If you don’t have these skills don’t worry. You can develop with your hard work and dedication over time. Remember ‘Rome was not built in a day. So be positive.

Positive attitude really help a person to face any situation I would like to add the story , One of the story goes like this….
Edison was in the process of inventing his well known invention-the incandescent lamp.The headache in this process is to find a suitable material that glows on heating.He was trying a lot of combinations to suite his need but in vain(it is a pity tungston was not popular in those days)our man is not going to give up.But his assistant was not as optimistic as Edison.One fine day he asked Edison with total loss of hope what on earth he was trying to do and how does he intend to find the right substance in this way.Edison replied “By checking these hundreds of compounds,i have eliminated the substances that does not glow.So i would soon be able to find the right substance in this way”.He does not mean what he literaly said.But this is an optimistic way of looking at things.Consider you have a glass containing some water.An optimistic person will be happy that it is half filled with water and a pessimistic person will be disappointed that it is half empty.Optimism is the only way of converting failure to success.

Is your business stable?

Can anyone get Stability in business?   Where there is totally continuous growth and no loss? The answer is No, it is very difficult to achieve stability in today’s market scenario where there is lot of competition and advanced technology.

Now a day’s Stability is a big factor, even big organizations are struggling for it. it is something we can try to maintain .Business is full of uncertainty, Mostly it depends on external factors like customers choice, taste , budget etc .In economics we have read  about  PLC .i.e Prodct life cycle

The product life cycle describes the life of a product – from the day it first goes on sale to when it’s finally withdrawn from sale.

The Y-axis shows the sales of the product and the X-axis the time.

The product life cycle can be split into 5 sections (as shown on the graph):

  • Introduction – the initial launch of the product, sales will be slow and costs high.
  • Growth – sales start to increase as the product increases market share.
  • Maturity – growth in sales starts to slow until they eventually level out at a constant rate
  • Decline – sales begin to fall as new technology is released or consumer trends change.
  • Withdrawal – the product is eventually withdrawn from sale completely

The length of a products life cycle can vary – from weeks to centuries

Now the question is how we can maintain the stability?  It can be by

  • Innovation of new ideas or products.
  • Target wide Audience.
  • Updating yourself with advanced technology.
  • Most important always keep something from your Profit in buffer so that any uncertainty can not affect you anyways financially which is the most critical part.
  • Strong Marketing and Branding strategy.-I like tagline of an advertisement where it states “jo dikhta hai wog bikta hai” it does not simply mean that you should only be presentable and your service product is outdated or worthless if we see other side , it means that if people know about your product and service they approach you and they will give you a chance and we need only a chance then only we can prove our self.

If I talk with a view point of Hr consultant at GS Job Point, in our Profession we face lots of ups and down. Sometimes there are  lots of profiles for us to work on, which overloads us.. which is the best time for us. Sometimes, the positions drop to just few. In recruitment firms profit is calculate on the basis of number of positions we close, which is also full of competition and quite risky too. So stability factor a part of every Business whether it is big or small.

So friends Business is full of ups and down   profit and loss, risk and troubles it is the mixture of everything. Enjoy it and  be a good Entrepreneur. All the best
